The Arno leaves Florence through unglamorous suburbs, water treatment works and allotments, and then quite suddenly turns into countryside. That is most of the appeal: an afternoon on a bicycle with no monuments in it. Bikes rent by the day in the centre. Flat the whole way, so the distance is up to you.
