Fuori Porta
A wine bar just outside the old San Niccolo gate, open since the eighties, with hundreds of labels and crostoni that count as dinner.

- Go for
- A wine list built over thirty five years around small producers, with the crostoni that made the place famous.
- Skip if
- You want a quiet table. It is small, it is always full, and the noise is part of it.
What everybody agrees on
Read across public reviews on Google and TripAdvisor plus Italian wine and city writing in September 2026.
- Nearly all
The crostoni are what people order and what they describe afterwards. Warm open sandwiches, and the reason the place is known outside its own street.
- Most
It began as a mescita, a counter selling wine by the glass, and the wine is still the point. The list leans hard on small Italian producers.
- Most
It is packed most evenings, and Florentines are a real share of the room.
- Often
The same care extends to the food: the kitchen buys from the same kind of small producers as the cellar.
- Some
It sits at the bottom of the climb to Piazzale Michelangelo, which makes it a natural stop before or after the walk.
What to order
A crostone and a glass you have never heard of. Ask them to choose the wine after they know which crostone you picked, not before.
Before you go
- Getting there
- Just through Porta San Niccolo, at the foot of the road up to Piazzale Michelangelo.
- Best time
- Early evening, or lunch if you want a seat without waiting.
- Booking
- Worth calling for dinner.
The name means outside the gate, which is exactly where it is, at the bottom of the climb to San Miniato. Barrels, wooden tables, a blackboard of wines by the glass. It has been there long enough to be a fixture for the neighbourhood while sitting on the route every visitor eventually walks.
