A 1922 cinema inside a Renaissance palazzo, now a bookshop as well, where you can sit under a stained glass dome for as long as you like.

You want a working cafe with fast service. It is a reading room first.

What everybody agrees on

Read across public reviews on Google and TripAdvisor plus Italian press coverage of the reopening in September 2026.

  • Nearly all

The room does the work. A domed ceiling of coloured glass, gilded stucco, and cinema seats still in place.

  • Most

Films still run in their original language with Italian subtitles, which is rare in Florence.

  • Most

Nobody moves you along. People sit for hours in the upper gallery, and reviewers mention this specifically.

  • Often

There is a good English language section, which matters if you have run out of something to read.

  • Some

The cafe is secondary to the room. Come for the space rather than the coffee.

What to order

Go up to the gallery rather than sitting on the ground floor. That is where the ceiling is closest and where nobody will interrupt you.

The Odeon opened as a cinema in 1922 inside Palazzo dello Strozzino, under a domed ceiling of coloured glass with gilded stucco. It ran for close to a century, then reopened in November 2023 as a bookshop and cinema together.

Around twenty five thousand titles including originals in English, a cafe with a wine window, and the old hall still screening films in their original language with Italian subtitles. During the day the upper gallery is open with seating and nobody hurries you out.
