What everybody agrees on

Read across public reviews on Google and TripAdvisor in September 2026.

  • Nearly all

The Sala della Cavalcata is what people remember: a procession of mounted figures in real armour, European and Ottoman, drawn up in one long hall.

  • Most

It is a collector's house rather than a museum, and the arrangement is his rather than a curator's. Reviewers find this either fascinating or overwhelming.

  • Often

The Japanese armour is unexpectedly strong, and one of the larger collections outside Japan.

  • Often

The park is free and almost empty, with a lake and a small Egyptian temple.

  • Some

Visits to the house are by guided tour at set times, which people arriving on spec do not expect.

What to order

Check the tour times before you set out, then arrive early and spend the wait in the park rather than at the gate.

Before you go

Bus 4 from Santa Maria Novella station, about fifteen minutes.

The armour hall works from about six.

Frederick Stibbert was born in Florence to a British family, inherited a fortune and spent it on about fifty thousand objects: European, Islamic and Japanese arms and armour, costume, furniture, tapestries. He left it all to the city when he died in 1906, and it is still arranged the way he left it.

The Sala della Cavalcata is the room people remember. Life sized figures in real armour, European and Ottoman, mounted and drawn up in formation down one long hall.

The park outside is free and usually empty: an English style garden by Giuseppe Poggi with a lake, a small Egyptian temple and grottoes. Bus 4 from Santa Maria Novella station, about fifteen minutes.
