A narrow paved lane between garden walls that leaves the city almost immediately. Ten minutes up it you are among olive trees with birds instead of scooters, still inside the city walls. Locals call the viewpoint partway up lo scorcio, the glimpse: a break in the stonework that frames the dome and the tower with no railing, no crowd and no queue.
It connects naturally to the Giardino delle Rose, which is a few minutes across, and to San Miniato above. The climb is real and the surface is uneven, so proper shoes rather than sandals.
Start at Porta San Miniato in San Niccolo, about twelve minutes on foot east from Ponte Vecchio along the south bank.
