San Miniato al Monte has the best view in Florence and it is free. The Giardino delle Rose, one terrace below Piazzale Michelangelo, is the quietest. The Piazzale itself has the postcard version and the crowd that goes with it.
The written guide What to avoid in FlorenceOrdered by how much climbing it takes to get there, from a lift to a forty minute walk uphill. The view improves roughly in the same direction, which is the whole point of the list.
A rooftop terrace above Piazza della Repubblica with cocktails, a DJ later, and a view straight across the roofs to the dome.
A fortified abbey standing alone among Chianti vineyards, with a Ghirlandaio Last Supper inside and cypress avenues around it.
A literary cafe founded in 1896 on the hill road to Piazzale Michelangelo, with a garden, a vegetable plot and a restaurant behind it.
Two hours on the Arno, launching from the beach under Torre di San Niccolo and passing beneath the bridge everybody else is standing on.
One small inflatable kayak each, so you paddle yourself down the Arno instead of sitting in a raft with seven other people and a guide.
A rooftop bar on the loggia of a palazzo in the centre, open in the warm months, with the Duomo close enough to feel oversized.
The hill above Fiesole where Leonardo is said to have tested his flying machine, with a loop walk through old sandstone quarries and a view down the Arno valley.
A hillside park northeast of the centre with a lake, a neoclassical villa and meadows that open straight onto the city.
A village on a terrace above the city where Michelangelo was nursed, with a square, a bar and paths running out into olive terraces.
The cafe on the top floor of the public library, with a terrace facing Brunelleschi's dome at close range, for the price of a coffee.
The same panorama as Piazzale Michelangelo, one terrace lower and with a fraction of the people. Free, with roses from May and bronze figures by Folon through the grounds.
The postcard view of Florence, and the busiest square in the city at sunset. Two better versions of the same view are ten minutes away on foot.
A terraced hillside garden in the Oltrarno with a belvedere that frames the Duomo, and a fraction of the crowd of the Boboli Gardens next door.
A steep walled lane climbing out of San Niccolo through olive terraces, with a gap in the wall halfway up that frames the whole city.
An eleventh century basilica eight minutes uphill from Piazzale Michelangelo. Free, higher than the Piazzale, and the framing is cleaner because there are no stalls in the foreground.
A tree lined boulevard along the hills of the south bank, laid out in the 1860s, running from Porta Romana to Piazza Ferrucci by way of Piazzale Michelangelo.
