Twenty minutes by bus from the centre and almost nobody goes. Settignano produced a run of sculptors, including Desiderio da Settignano, and Michelangelo spent his infancy here with a stonecutter’s family.

Piazza Desiderio has a terrace with a view straight down onto Florence, a bar with tables on it, and a church. From there, footpaths drop through olive groves towards the Mensola valley and connect to Vincigliata.

Bus 10 from Piazza San Marco, last stop. Good in the evening, when the light is on the city.
