FLORENCE MEDIA

The Viale dei Colli walk

A tree lined boulevard along the hills of the south bank, laid out in the 1860s, running from Porta Romana to Piazza Ferrucci by way of Piazzale Michelangelo.

Giuseppe Poggi built this road when Florence was briefly the capital of Italy, and he built it to be walked. It curves along the hillside above the Oltrarno with the city on one side and garden walls on the other.

The two ends are the quiet part: shaded, and close to empty even in August.

Start at Porta Romana, fifteen minutes on foot from Ponte Vecchio up Via Romana, and finish at Piazza Ferrucci on the river. About an hour, mostly downhill in that direction. Bus 12 from Porta Romana runs the same route.
