Piazzale Michelangelo
The postcard view of Florence, and the busiest square in the city at sunset. Two better versions of the same view are ten minutes away on foot.

- Go for
- The view everyone has seen in photographs, which is genuinely one of the best in Italy, seen once and preferably not at sunset.
- Skip if
- You are going at sunset expecting calm. That is the busiest hour of the day up there.
What everybody agrees on
Read across public reviews on Google and TripAdvisor in September 2026. Consistently among the highest rated sights in Florence and among the most criticised for crowds.
- Nearly all
The panorama is the whole reason and almost nobody disputes it. The city, the Arno and the hills in one frame.
- Most
At sunset it is packed. Reviewers who arrive then describe a car park full of people holding phones.
- Most
Early morning is the fix. Same view, almost empty, and the light is on the city rather than behind it.
- Often
It functions as a road junction as well as a terrace, with coaches and traffic behind you.
- Often
The Giardino delle Rose below and San Miniato above give the same view with a fraction of the people.
What to order
Go once, in the morning. If you want the evening version, walk five minutes up to San Miniato instead and let the crowd stay below you.
Before you go
- Getting there
- Twenty minutes uphill on foot from Ponte alle Grazie, or bus 12 or 13.
- Best time
- Early morning, or an hour after sunset when it empties.
- Nearby
- Giardino delle Rose is a two minute walk below.
Laid out in the nineteenth century as a terrace over the city, with a bronze copy of the David in the middle and souvenir stalls along the edge. From about an hour before sunset the parapet is three people deep and coaches queue on the road behind. Everything the photographs promise is genuinely there. So is the crowd. Giardino delle Rose is one terrace below and San Miniato is eight minutes above, both free and both quieter.
